The body of US climber Sarah Mallory Geis, who was among 10 members of an international expedition killed in an avalanche on Broad Peak on July 30, was recovered on Friday, the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) said.
The avalanche struck the expedition on July 30, cutting off contact with the 10-member team led by British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja. Purja’s company later confirmed that none of the climbers had survived.
Rescue teams subsequently recovered the bodies of eight expedition members, including Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi. Geis and Nepali climber Nawang Thindu Sherpa remained missing.
ACP President Maj Gen (retd) Irfan Arshad Khan said Geis’s body was found on the slopes of Broad Peak by local rescue volunteers and was being moved to the base camp.
The body has been identified as Geis. It will be shifted to base camp and then airlifted to Skardu by Pakistan Army helicopters. The search for Sherpa would continue.
