According to an official report, PTA has blocked more than 1 million web links and URLs across major social media platforms and other digital services.
The report was submitted to LHC, it said that the PTA examined thousands of links across platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and X and ordered the blocking of large numbers of URLs that allegedly spread content against religion, morality, state institutions, or court orders.
On Facebook, more than 229,000 links were reviewed and about 197,000 blocked, while Instagram saw 38,000 removals out of 43,000 checked. TikTok faced the strictest action, with over 163,000 videos and links blocked. YouTube and X also saw significant removals, with more than 64,000 and 70,800 links blocked respectively.
These links had immoral and obscene material and content allegedly targeting the state and Pakistan’s defense. Material considered anti-religious led to more than 109,000 removals. Links flagged for sectarian hatred also faced action, though content involving defamation or fake identity had fewer blocks.
This action was taken to enforce Pakistan’s digital content laws under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016. This law empowers authorities to restrict access to content viewed as a threat to public morality, national security, and societal harmony.
