A pregnant woman and her newborn died at Karachi's Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) after she was allegedly not shifted to the intensive care unit despite beds reportedly being available, media reports said, citing hospital sources.
According to the reports, the woman had initially been admitted to the gynaecology ward with severe abdominal pain and was later shifted to the gastroenterology ward.
Doctors in the gastroenterology ward reportedly requested her transfer to the ICU after her condition deteriorated. However, she was allegedly not shifted despite three ICU beds being vacant at the time.
The doctors alleged that the woman gave birth in the gastroenterology ward but died shortly afterwards. The newborn also could not survive.
JPMC Executive Deputy Director Dr Salman took notice of the incident and formed a high-level inquiry committee to determine the facts. He said those found responsible for negligence would face strict legal action.
