Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Switzerland on Sunday to participate in high-level technical talks between Iran and the United States aimed at implementing the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Shehbaz arrived in Zurich accompanied by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir. The talks are scheduled to take place in Bürgenstock and will mark the first formal engagement between the US and Iran since the signing of the Islamabad MoU on June 17.
The agreement, signed earlier this week, established a framework for ending hostilities between Washington and Tehran, lifting the US blockade on Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, the Foreign Office said Pakistan would continue supporting the implementation of the understandings reached between the two countries. It added that high-level delegations from Iran, the US and Qatar would participate in the discussions.
The Foreign Office also said Prime Minister Shehbaz is expected to hold separate meetings with representatives from Iran, Qatar, Switzerland and the United States to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to dialogue and regional peace.
Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance confirmed his participation in the talks, saying discussions would focus on Iran’s nuclear programme and efforts to maintain the Lebanon ceasefire. US negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are also involved in the technical negotiations.
