WASHINGTON: US Vice President JD Vance on Thursday publicly criticised Israeli lawmakers who opposed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking at the White House, Vance suggested Israel should avoid antagonising its strongest ally, saying those who view the US president as Israel’s biggest problem are ignoring reality.

Under the agreement, Washington and Tehran have outlined a framework to end hostilities and begin a 60-day negotiation process. Vance stressed that Iran would only receive benefits such as sanctions relief, renewed oil exports, and reconstruction assistance if it fully complies with the deal’s terms.

Rejecting criticism that the agreement rewards Iran without addressing concerns over its nuclear programme, Vance said the focus would be on verification rather than promises. He added that the US had already begun implementing parts of the arrangement, including easing its naval blockade.

Vance also revealed plans to travel to Switzerland for technical negotiations on a long-term agreement, pending final arrangements with Iranian officials.

As the administration’s leading voice on the Iran deal, Vance acknowledged the political stakes but expressed confidence in the negotiations, saying the team had placed the agreement in a strong position for the American people.
