The Karachi police on Thursday arrested a man for an alleged attempt to sexually assault an eight-year-old second-grade student at a government primary school in Soldier Bazaar.

According to the police, the incident took place at the Government Girls and Boys Primary School in Soldier Bazaar No. 2. The girl reportedly fled the school and reached home, where she informed her family about the alleged incident.

The girl's family then reached the school, where some people allegedly vandalised the premises. Area residents also caught the suspect and his father, the school watchman, and assaulted them before handing the suspect over to police.

The incident triggered a protest outside Soldier Bazaar police station, with protesters burning tyres and blocking the road to demand action against the suspect.

The SHO Soldier Bazaar identified the arrested suspect as Shehryar, son of the school watchman. He said the watchman lives on the school premises and the suspect had fled after the incident but was later taken into custody by police.

Police said further legal action was being taken against the suspect and that officers dispersed the protesters after talks.

The SHO said the girl would undergo a medical examination if deemed necessary.

A case has been registered against the suspect on the complaint of the girl's father.
