A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking action against the use of chemical fireworks during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 11 final held at Gaddafi Stadium on May 3.

The petition, submitted by Ashba Kamran, names the Punjab government and relevant authorities as respondents. It argues that the use of fireworks during the high-profile event violated citizens’ fundamental rights, particularly under Article 9 of the Constitution.

According to the plea, the use of chemical fireworks contradicts ongoing anti-smog measures imposed on the public, including restrictions affecting farmers. The petitioner contended that allowing fireworks during a major sporting event reflects discriminatory enforcement of environmental regulations.

The petition further stated that Lahore continues to face significant air pollution challenges and alleged that the Environmental Protection Department failed to take adequate steps to prevent environmental damage during the event.

The petitioner has requested the court to impose an environmental penalty equivalent to 25 per cent of the PSL’s revenue on the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). It also urged that the amount be deposited into the Punjab Green Fund to support environmental protection initiatives.
